Jayms Portune Receives Coder Camps Scholarship

Jayms Portune of Seattle is the recipient of the 2016 Coder Camps scholarship. The merit-based award enables him to enroll in the class of his choice and, through the Coder for Life program, receive continuing education and career services support for life, for free.

Growing up in Washington, Jayms always had an interest in figuring out how things worked. At first it was puzzles but soon it became technology too. A family-friend introduced him to computers and at the age of 9 he was troubleshooting and even building computers.

After high school, Jayms enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. The military taught him entry level programming and assigned him to work in the field of server administration. After an injury in 2012, Jayms left the Corps and, after a series of government agency jobs, landed at Hewlett Packard in Seattle where he now works as an IT Specialist.

Since leaving the Marines, Jayms “wanted to start school again but I was moving around a lot, and finances were tight. IT is something I’m comfortable doing and I’ve stuck with it with the intention of more school but so far, I hadn’t gotten around to it.”

Jayms came across the Coder Camps scholarship information on Facebook. Intrigued, he did some research and found the boot camp to have a well-respected reputation and positive student reviews. “I was nervous in the beginning because this is a big leap for me. But Coder Camps would have been my first choice because of your good reviews. I enrolled in the online version of .NET so I am able to keep working my job while I take the class.”

Jayms starts class this week and he has very high hopes. His long-term goals include moving into Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development which will require more school however Coder Camps is a good first step in the right direction. With the .NET training, he will be able to move into a web development role while he studies for his ultimate dream job in AI.

“I’ve needed a positive change in my life and this scholarship is it. It’s a great motivator for continuing my education in something that I really want to do.”
